Milton's Citizens Government Academy takes applications now for 20 places: eight Tuesday evenings from late January, behind the scenes with city departments.

Milton is taking applications for the 2027 class of its Citizens Government Academy. The city course takes residents inside City Hall and other city facilities for eight weeks to meet the people who run them.

The city announced the class in a news release posted Tuesday. It said each class “routinely fills all its spots” and asked people to apply as soon as possible.

How the academy works

The details come from the release and the city’s Citizens Government Academy page:

  • When: Tuesday evenings, 6:30 to 9 p.m., for eight weeks.
  • Start: late January, finishing in early spring. The city has not published exact dates.
  • Where: City Hall, 2006 Heritage Walk, and other city buildings in Milton.
  • Class size: limited to 20 people.
  • Who can apply: people 18 or older who are Milton residents or business leaders in the city.

Topics listed on the city’s page include:

  • emergency services and law enforcement
  • planning and zoning
  • finance and the budget
  • the court system
  • public works and special projects
  • parks and recreation

The sessions mix presentations with hands-on projects, the city said. Instructors change each week depending on the department being covered.

The city has run the academy eight times. The most recent class finished in spring 2026, so the 2027 class will be the ninth.

What it means for you

If you want to understand how decisions on roads, zoning, parks and the budget get made, this is a direct route in. It runs alongside the meetings you can already attend, such as the Planning Commission and City Council.

To apply, fill in the online form on the city’s Citizens Government Academy page. It asks for:

  • your name, home address and email
  • whether you are a Milton resident, and your business name and address if you lead a Milton business
  • any experience you have in government, as an employee, committee member or elected official
  • your involvement in the Milton community, such as schools, nonprofits, HOAs, sports or faith groups
  • why you want to take part

Neither the release nor the program page lists a fee or an application deadline. Questions go to the city’s community outreach manager at 678-242-2533, the number the city gives for the program.
